Amazing that CTR is considered more than ROI. Although, in fairness, pretty much everything on this list — other than “Do not measure effectiveness” — is a proxy for ROI.
“The effective way to use a cliché is to point to it and then do precisely the opposite. Juxtapose the cliché with the unexpected truth of what you have to offer.”
Seth’s Blog: How to use clichés
(Seth also points us to his secret weapon. — ”I often use the Encyclopedia of Clichés to find clichés that then inspire opposites. It’s a secret weapon and it’s all yours now. Have fun.”)

Why would you do anything else.
“Good SEO techniques are just good web development techniques. They should be obvious to anyone who makes websites for a living. If they’re not obvious to you, and you make websites, you need to get informed. If you’re a client, make sure you hire an informed web develper.”
“There’s only one thing I forgot to take into account: NOBODY CARES. Well, that’s not completely true, my parents kind of care. But for the most part, nobody gives a crap what you want to do. Most people will only take interest in things that will help them, or help them help others. It’s not about me (or you), it’s about helping people.”
The Kickstarter Blog - Lessons from a Floundering Kickstarter Project
The best way to get people to pay attention or do something is to always make it about THEM.
Feltron Infographics + Kickstarter = Totally Awesome!
Kickstarter wants to team up with Nicholas Felton to explore statistical displays of the data around each campaign. aka INFOGRAPHICS!
Kickstarter is a new service that lets you fund creative ideas based on the belief that
- A good idea, communicated well, can spread fast and wide.
- A large group of people can be a tremendous source of money and encouragement.
From the project page:
We’ve asked infographic maestro Nicholas Felton, of the famed Feltron Annual Report and Daytum, to kindly help us turn our data — like the stats you see on the upper right-hand side of this page — into something more fun, exciting and intuitive; not to mention sexy as hell.
If you’re anything like us, infographics turn you on in a big way. We think they’re super fun, and Nicholas knows how to whip them into shape better than anyone we know. If you’re not familiar with his work definitely check out the links above — but don’t forget to come back :).
A big part of why I think Kickstarter is so amazing is that they successfully leverage the new social nature of the web but add a layer of ”social proof“ to get people to act and become a “Backer.” Infographics are a big part of developing that social proof.
Wikipedia defines social proof as:
Social proof, also known as informational social influence, is a psychological phenomenon that occurs in ambiguous social situations when people are unable to determine the appropriate mode of behavior.
Making the assumption that surrounding people possess more knowledge about the situation, they will deem the behavior of others as appropriate or better informed.
I just pledged to this campaign. I think you should too!
Check it out at Kickstarter.com.
