Create something that you want to see in the world

I’ve seen the point made several times that Twitter is a shining example of company that’s become a media darling without, and even because they have no formal PR representation. Well, when your CEO is also your chief publicity officer, I suppose the external function could be seen as redundant.

Sure, that’s hyperbole. PR is a lot more than understanding how to speak in sound bites and provide inspirational quotes. But don’t kid yourself, it’s part of it. If you’re the face of your company and you’re not thinking about those things; if you want to let the product speak for itself and get the hell out of the way, your message is going to travel a lot slower.

You are the biggest cheerleader for your company. Don’t cringe at that characterization, embrace it.

When we were designing the site, we were wrong about almost everything we thought people would want to use it for. I thought it would be a niche lifestyle venture, perhaps for fan clubs. I had no idea that people would form new types of P.T.A.’s, chambers of commerce or health support groups. And we weren’t thinking that anyone would want to meet about politics, but there are thousands of these Meetups.

It’s never going to be over, so stop waiting for the good stuff. As of now, spend a minimum of one hour a day doing whatever you are waiting to do until your finances are more secure, or until the children have grown and left home, or until you have finished your obligations and you feel free to do what you really want to do. Don’t wait any longer. Don’t believe in the myth of “one day when everything will be different.” Do what you love to do, what you are waiting to do, what you’ve been born to do, now.

Spend at least one hour a day doing whatever you simply love to do — what you deeply feel you need to do, in your heart — in spite of the daily duties that seem to constrain you. However, be forewarned: you may discover that you don’t, or can’t, do it; that in fact, your fantasy of your future life is simply a fantasty.

My quest in life now is to surround myself with smart, innovative people instead of the gangster types who have exploited artists over the years.
