I’ve seen the point made several times that Twitter is a shining example of company that’s become a media darling without, and even because they have no formal PR representation. Well, when your CEO is also your chief publicity officer, I suppose the external function could be seen as redundant.
Sure, that’s hyperbole. PR is a lot more than understanding how to speak in sound bites and provide inspirational quotes. But don’t kid yourself, it’s part of it. If you’re the face of your company and you’re not thinking about those things; if you want to let the product speak for itself and get the hell out of the way, your message is going to travel a lot slower.
You are the biggest cheerleader for your company. Don’t cringe at that characterization, embrace it.
